Universal Plant Services buys Mechanical Solutions Inc to expand engineering capabilities

Sometimes, a business acquisition feels like just another corporate transaction. But this one? It’s different.

Universal Plant Services (UPS) just announced they’ve acquired Mechanical Solutions Inc (MSI). And if you work with rotating or reciprocating equipment—think pumps, compressors, turbines—this is a game-changer.

Here’s why I’m excited about it.

UPS has always been the go-to for field services—the boots on the ground who keep plants running during outages and maintenance. MSI, on the other hand, is the brains behind the brawn. For over 30 years, they’ve been diagnosing complex machinery issues from their New Jersey headquarters, figuring out why a pump is failing before anyone even picks up a wrench.

Now, they’re under one roof.

What does that mean for you? No more handoffs between “the analysts” and “the fixers.” You get a seamless team that can go from vibration analysis and root-cause diagnostics straight into on-site repairs and outage execution—all with the same quality, safety, and care.

As Eric Zimmer, UPS’s CEO, put it: this creates a true “end-to-end solution.” And Bill Marscher of MSI says the two companies already share the same obsession with safety and service.

Whether you’re in refining, power generation, or water/wastewater, this is one partnership worth watching. Less finger-pointing, more fixing. That’s a win.
